Norway’s stormy weather to ease as spring approaches
The stormy conditions that swept across southern Norway this week will give way to milder weather, with meteorologists confirming spring is on its way, reports Dagbladet.
After a powerful storm system caused road closures and downed trees in southern Norway on Thursday, heavy rain on Friday is expected to subside by the afternoon, according to Eldbjørg Moxnes, a meteorologist at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.
“There is definitely improvement coming, but it will mostly be a grey-weather weekend for southern and eastern Norway,” Moxnes told Dagbladet on Friday morning. Temperatures are expected to stay above freezing, with possible fog, light drizzle, or rain on Saturday before conditions improve slightly on Sunday.
Western Norway will see little change, with continued showers, while the storm system—now moving northward—may bring snow squalls and blowing snow to Finnmarksvidda, prompting a yellow weather alert for the region. Moxnes noted that the storm has weakened since hitting southern Norway and that northern areas may even see some sunshine by Sunday.
“Spring is absolutely on its way,” she said. “We see no signs of new cold spells, though it will take time for the ground to thaw and the snow to disappear.”
For those planning ski trips during Easter, mountain areas will still have snow, but lowland regions will see significant melting in the coming weeks.
