The director of Norway’s National Criminal Investigation Service (Kripos) was the only candidate to apply for the position when it was advertised earlier this year, Dagbladet reports.

Kristin Ottesen Kvigne, 61, who has led Kripos since 2020, was the sole applicant for a new four-year term when the role was opened for applications in February. The agency plays a central role in combating organised and serious crime in Norway, including cross-border criminal networks and youth recruitment by gangs.

Kvigne, the first woman to hold the position, has overseen Kripos during a period marked by rising serious and organised crime. Authorities have noted an increase in violent offences, greater coordination among criminal groups, and the recruitment of younger individuals into gang environments.

When asked about the lack of competing applicants, Kvigne told Dagbladet she did not believe it reflected low interest in the role. “This is a demanding job that requires broad expertise and experience,” she said. “It’s not surprising that few meet the qualifications.”

Kripos operates as Norway’s national unit for tackling organised crime, financial crime, cybercrime, and other serious offences. The agency also supports local police districts with specialised investigative resources.
