Northern Iceland hit by avalanches and severe blizzard conditions

A severe winter storm has brought avalanches, impassable roads, and hazardous travel conditions to northeastern Iceland, according to national broadcaster RÚV. Heavy snowfall and strong winds have disrupted transport and forced road closures across the region.

Multiple avalanches have been reported, with authorities warning of high risk in vulnerable areas. Visibility is severely reduced, and driving conditions are described as extremely difficult. Emergency services advise against non-essential travel, particularly in mountainous and coastal zones.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued weather alerts for the area, cautioning that gusts may exceed 20 metres per second. Residents are urged to secure loose objects and prepare for potential power outages.

Blizzard conditions are expected to persist through the day, with snow accumulation making some rural roads completely impassable. Local authorities are monitoring the situation and coordinating response efforts.
