Roads in Iceland’s Westfjords closed overnight due to avalanche risk
Two roads in Iceland’s Westfjords region will be closed from midnight due to a high risk of avalanches, authorities announced on Thursday.
The closures affect Flateyrarvegur (Road 62) and the route through Súðavíkurhlíð (Road 61), both key connections in the area. The Icelandic Meteorological Office and local civil protection agencies issued the warning following heavy snowfall and unstable weather conditions.
Residents and travellers are advised to avoid the area until further notice. Emergency services remain on standby, and road conditions will be reassessed in the morning.
Avalanches are a recurring hazard in Iceland’s mountainous regions, particularly during winter storms. The Westfjords, known for steep terrain and heavy snowfall, have seen multiple closures this season due to similar risks.
