Faroese prosecutors appeal acquittal in landmark election fraud case

Prosecutors in the Faroe Islands have appealed a district court ruling that acquitted a man accused of tampering with a ballot in the country’s first election fraud case.

The case, which centres on an invalidated ballot in Oyndarfjørður, was heard in February at the Court of the Faroe Islands (*Føroya Rættur*), where the defendant was cleared of charges. The prosecution alleges the man altered a ballot, rendering it invalid. The court’s verdict was not unanimous.

The Eastern High Court (*Eystari landsrættur*), currently in session in the Faroe Islands, will review the appeal, though a date has not yet been set.
