Tromsø Idrettslag (TIL) is well-positioned to secure its third medal in four seasons, according to NRK Troms’ football commentator Gunnar Grindstein. The team won bronze last season and has the potential to repeat the feat, provided several factors align.

TIL opens its Eliteserien 2026 campaign on Sunday at home against Fredrikstad, a team that failed to score against Tromsø’s goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard in both their meetings last season. Fredrikstad finished eighth in the league last year.

Under head coach Jørgen Vik, TIL has shown strong defensive play, conceding fewer goals than any team except Bodø/Glimt and Fredrikstad last season. Key defensive players like Tobias Guddal and Sedi Kinteh remain with the club, ensuring continuity.

However, the team’s primary challenge lies in improving its offensive output. Last season, TIL scored 50 goals in 30 matches, a significant increase from the previous year but still 27 goals fewer than champions Viking and 35 fewer than Bodø/Glimt. With top scorers Ieltsin Camoes and Vegard Erlien no longer with the team, TIL must rely on new signings and existing players to step up.

One such signing is Viktor Ekblom, a 27-year-old striker from Swedish club Falkenbergs FF, who is recovering from a light injury. His performance, along with that of Daniel Braut, will be crucial for TIL’s offensive success.

Despite the uncertainty, Grindstein believes TIL has a strong squad and is poised for another successful season. He predicts that while Bodø/Glimt and Viking will remain the top teams, TIL has a realistic chance of securing another bronze medal.
