Power outages raise concerns in Mýrdalshreppur, Iceland as mayor calls for urgent electrical grid improvements

In Mýrdalshreppur, a significant issue has emerged due to the lack of a ring connection in the electrical grid. Einar Freyr Elínarson, the municipality’s mayor, highlighted that recent power outages in Vík and surrounding areas occurred for the second time in three months. He noted that while most regions in Iceland have a ring connection to reroute power in case of a line failure, Mýrdalshreppur is at a disadvantage. The existing line heading east towards Klaustri is inadequate and cannot support the necessary load, complicating the situation.

In response to the outages, backup generators have been deployed, and residents are urged to conserve electricity. Einar indicated that the community is becoming accustomed to these power disruptions, with the last major outage occurring just recently. The problems stem from the Skógá river, which has eroded and damaged the underground power line. This issue is reminiscent of prior incidents involving the Jökulsá river.

The mayor expressed concerns over the potential dangers of power outages, particularly for vulnerable facilities such as nursing homes where patients may rely on life-support systems. Recently, school operations had to be suspended due to a lack of electricity.

Despite previous initiatives from Rarik to install backup generators in Vík, the connection to the grid remains pending. Einar emphasized that there seems to be a lack of urgency in addressing the power supply challenges in this high-demand area, known for its substantial power consumption due to various commercial activities catering to tourism and local needs.
