Five men sentenced to life imprisonment for violent shooting in Christiania, Copenhagen

Five men, Mohammad Mahdi Al-Badri, Josef Madani, Rasim Baysal, Seck Omar Danpha, have been sentenced to life imprisonment for a violent shooting in Christiania last year that resulted in one death and multiple injuries. This ruling was reached by a jury in Copenhagen District Court.

The court emphasized the severity of the charges, which included murder and attempted murder, as well as intentions to escalate an existing conflict. According to the investigation, each of the four defendants played distinct roles during the shooting. One individual fired at least 20 rounds, while others facilitated the escape and provided logistical support. However, the court noted that they collectively planned the incident.

Their defense attorneys indicated plans to appeal the verdict, seeking reduced sentences. Before the judges retired, 29-year-old Seck Omar Danpha, who was found guilty of firing many shots, expressed his dissatisfaction, claiming there was no evidence against them and describing the proceedings as a “miscarriage of justice.”

In addition to their sentences, the four men received restrictions on their movement in several areas requested by the prosecution. While Al-Badri was acquitted of losing his citizenship, Baysal was permanently expelled from the country.

The group was convicted of plotting the murder of a 30-year-old man, previously linked to a gang and affiliated briefly with Hells Angels, with the court indicating that their actions aimed to provoke conflict with this group. They were also found guilty of perpetuating membership in a banned gang.

Initially charged with four counts of attempted murder, the court ultimately convicted them of three. Witnesses affected by the shooting shared the lasting psychological impacts, with one survivor noting a marked change in life since the incident. There is also a fifth suspect still at large, believed to have fled abroad.
