Kristrún Frostadóttir, leader of the Social Democratic Party in Iceland, recently met with Halla Tómasdóttir, the president of Iceland, to discuss the formation of a new government. Following their meeting, the president announced that Kristrún has been granted the mandate to pursue government formation talks.

Kristrún intends to initiate discussions with the parties Viðreisn (Revival) and the People’s Party, aiming to unite their efforts. During a light-hearted meeting with party leaders, Inga Sæland from the People’s Party encouraged her colleagues by singing a line from a popular song affirming their unity, which was met with a positive reception.

With this development, all three party leaders are preparing for their initial official negotiation session concerning the new government. Key issues at hand include fostering stable economic conditions, reducing inflation, and creating favorable circumstances for interest rate cuts. Hanna Katrín Friðriksson from Viðreisn emphasized the need for collaboration among the parties despite their diverse priorities.

Kristrún expressed optimism about achieving constructive dialogue and stated that the results of the recent elections have clarified which parties have garnered significant support—namely, her own, Viðreisn, and the People’s Party. The leaders will reconvene later today to further deliberate on these matters.

In related political news, Sigríður Júlía Brynleifsdóttir has been appointed as the new mayor of Ísafjörður, succeeding Arna Lára Jónsdóttir, who will take a seat in the parliament after recent elections.
