The political landscape in Iceland is undergoing significant changes as Kristrún Frostadóttir, leader of the Social Democratic Alliance, has been summoned to meet with the President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir. Following their meeting, which took place this morning, the President announced that Kristrún has been granted the mandate to form a new government.

In anticipation of forming a coalition, Kristrún plans to engage in discussions with the leaders of the Reform Party and the People’s Party later today. She expressed optimism about these negotiations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining economic stability, particularly in reducing interest rates and inflation.

Kristrún noted that despite the differing priorities among the three parties, there is a shared platform they can work from to address major issues facing the country. “I would not embark on this journey unless I believed it could yield results,” she stated, although she refrained from confirming aspirations for the position of Prime Minister.

The election results have clearly indicated that these three parties achieved significant support, providing a solid foundation for collaboration. The presidency has officially allocated parliamentary seats based on the election outcomes and will host a meeting to finalize these distributions.

As party leaders prepare for their meeting this afternoon, the atmosphere is charged with potential for a new coalition that could reshape Iceland’s political future. The leaders are expected to hold a press conference upon concluding their discussions, further detailing the outcomes of their talks and the next steps in the formation of the government.
