Travelers warned of hazardous conditions on Highway 1 in South Iceland
Travel Advice: Hazardous Conditions on South Iceland’s Highway 1
Drivers in South Iceland are being cautioned against unnecessary travel on Highway 1, particularly around the Hornafjörður area, due to dangerous icy conditions. A significant stretch of the highway, spanning approximately 300 kilometers, is currently affected by slippery surfaces, making travel hazardous.
Workers from the road administration are actively treating the roads, but progress is slow. Only two vehicles are assigned to spread sand and deal with the ice, highlighting the challenge of the situation.
Gunnlaugur Rúnar Sigurðsson, a supervisor from the road administration in Höfn, reports that the icy surfaces pose a serious risk, especially in areas where compacted snow, known as ‘krapi,’ can cause vehicles to lose traction easily. He urges the public to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, while he anticipates improvements in road conditions later in the day.
The temperature in Höfn is currently around four degrees Celsius, while nearby Öræfi is experiencing milder temperatures at six degrees. Over the weekend, these regions saw considerable snowfall, unusual for an area that typically has less snow.
Travelers are advised to stay informed about road conditions and to prioritize safety during this winter weather.
