U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is visiting Europe for what is likely the final high-level NATO meeting before the Biden administration transitions to a potential second term under Donald Trump next month. The primary objective of this foreign ministers’ gathering is to prepare for the NATO summit scheduled in The Hague for June next year. Key topics on the agenda include long-term support for Ukraine and collaboration with countries in the Middle East, North Africa, and the Sahel region.

At 10:30 AM CET, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte will hold a press conference. Foreign ministers, including Sweden’s Maria Malmer Stenergard, are expected to arrive between 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM. They will participate in a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council, alongside their Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha. Malmer Stenergard emphasized the need to brace for a prolonged standoff with Russia, stating that the goal is to diminish Russia’s capacity to inflict harm.

Meanwhile, Trump has already set new expectations for NATO allies regarding defense spending, calling for a target where each member’s military budget should match 3% of its GDP. This demand has raised concerns among certain NATO members. Observers note the sudden pressure on countries to disclose their defense expenditures to the newly-elected president.

The ongoing discussions reflect a significant shift in NATO dynamics as the organization navigates these new mandates and international relationships amid evolving geopolitical tensions.
