Finnilä expresses support for Trump amid contrasting opinions in Finland
Tommi Finnilä, a staunch supporter of Donald Trump in Finland, sees the former U.S. president as an adept leader of democracy and the free world, particularly regarding relations with Russia and China. Finnilä places the right to life for the unborn above a woman’s right to choose. He believes that support for conservative values is growing in Europe, suggesting that Republicans might be underrepresented in Finnish polling statistics.
Finnilä and his wife, Nea, are unusual in Finland, where three out of four citizens would choose Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in a hypothetical vote for U.S. president. Despite this, Finnilä expresses elation over Trump’s election, claiming it was a profoundly joyful moment for him, unlike any other political event.
During the election night, he immersed himself in American patriotic music, making the event a unique personal experience. The couple proudly showcases Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again,” through various memorabilia, including hand-knit socks from Nea.
Domestic reactions to Finnilä’s support for Trump often range from admiration to criticism, especially directed at Nea following her public comments. While she has faced considerable backlash online, Tommi has mostly received positive feedback, raising questions about the hostility faced by women who support Trump.
As conservatism rises in Europe, Finnilä argues that Finland could learn from Trump’s policies, particularly regarding governance and economic management. He admires Trump’s approach to prioritizing the interests of American taxpayers. With Finland’s orthodox system, he believes there’s room for implementing similar ideas without discarding the Nordic welfare state entirely.
Regarding contentious topics such as abortion, Finnilä asserts that while women should have the right to determine their bodies, the rights of the unborn take precedence. He acknowledges the potential for increased division in society associated with differing views on such issues.
