Molde loses to Godset in Eliteserien finale as focus shifts to cup final against Fredrikstad
Ahead of the final round in Norway’s Eliteserien on Sunday, Molde found themselves two points ahead of Rosenborg and needed a victory to secure their fourth-place position. In Drammen, however, the team from Molde faced challenges and ultimately lost as Godset’s Nikolaj Möller scored the only goal of the match in the second half.
In a tense finish, Molde believed they had equalized in stoppage time when Frederik Ihler attempted to nudge the ball over the line, but VAR could not confirm the goal. While Godset had little more than pride at stake, they managed to upset Molde, having already secured their place in the league for the next season.
Molde is set to compete against Fredrikstad in the upcoming cup final this Saturday. A win would provide them a spot in the qualifiers for the Europa League, while a loss would mean that Molde would miss out on European competition next season. This winter, they are struggling in the league phase of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Despite the loss, Kristian Eriksen of Molde celebrated his achievement as the top scorer of the Eliteserien season, having netted 14 goals—two ahead of his closest competitors. This marks a rare instance, as the last time a top scorer completed the season with only 14 goals was in 2012. Strømsgodset’s victory served as a fitting conclusion to their campaign, proving that even with nothing on the line, they could still deliver a significant performance against a rival.
