December 1 marks the beginning of Advent, kicking off a month where holiday movies fill screens across the country. Despite the abundance of options, research shows that nearly 80% of viewers prefer to rewatch the same films each year. Film critic Benjamin Brekken explains this phenomenon by stating, “We seek comfort during the holiday season.”

Marianne Lein Moe, the news editor at iTromsø, recently viewed the Norwegian film “Snøsøsteren,” filmed in Tromsø. Both Moe and Brekken believe this movie has the potential to become a new holiday classic. Moe describes it as “a light in the darkness” that may attract tourists eager to experience its charm. She attributes much of the appeal of holiday films to their predictable happy endings, which resonate with audiences familiar with the narratives.

Brekken notes that successful holiday movies often include recurring character archetypes, such as the grumpy individual rediscovering the magic of the season and the hopeless romantic finding love. Common themes often feature elements of magic, including elves, snowmen, or festive spirits.

One new release, “Hot Frosty,” caught Brekken’s attention for including typical holiday traits, like a widow, a scarf, and a snowman, but Moe was less impressed, declaring, “I won’t be watching it next year.”

Classic films, such as “Love Actually,” have left a lasting impact. Moe attributes its popularity to its relatability, as it features a diverse array of characters and intertwining storylines that touch on universal holiday stress. Brekken adds that many enjoy watching holiday movies as comforting background entertainment, helping them recapture the nostalgic feelings of childhood. He believes that these films can evoke cherished memories and emotions from one’s past.
