As invitations were sent out by the Presidential Office for the annual Independence Day celebrations at the end of October and start of November, this marked the beginning of a busy season for formal wear shops in Finland. Approximately 1,700 guests will attend the prestigious event, prompting a surge in the sale and rental of tailcoats throughout November.

Jarmo Nordlin, the sales manager at a Helsinki-based tailcoat rental service, shared that they currently have just under 300 rented tailcoats available. While a dark suit is acceptable attire for the President’s Independence Day reception, the tailcoat remains the preferred choice for men. “It will be interesting to see if more dark suits are worn this year compared to previous events,” Nordlin noted.

At the ceremony wear store, Seremonia, around 200 tailcoats have already been rented out for the celebration. Sales manager Tarja Räty pointed out that the traditional tailcoat leaves little room for creative design; however, changes in cut have emerged over the years, particularly with narrower styling for trousers.

Nordlin also mentioned that leather tailcoats have made an appearance at the celebrations. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the chosen outfit adheres to the event’s etiquette. A good rule of thumb is that if the outfit is deemed appropriate for entry, it’s suitable.

For those renting formal attire, there’s a chance of donning outfits that have graced more distinguished events. Past rentals have included garments for royal gatherings in Sweden and the UK. A history steeped in military tradition, the tailcoat also connects to tales of a robust Welsh prince, linking fashion to historical anecdotes.

Looking ahead, the next wave of rentals is anticipated for high school proms in February, where demand is expected to be high.
