During discussions about the potential formation of a new government ahead of the 2024 Icelandic parliamentary elections, the leaders of the People’s Party and the Social Democratic Alliance commended each other in a televised debate. Kristrún, the head of the Social Democratic Alliance, emphasized that many votes were yet to be counted.

The political leaders engaged in dialogue at the RÚV election night broadcast. Kristrún Frostadóttir expressed her desire to enter a government where the party’s priorities could thrive, specifically mentioning welfare and economic issues like resource taxation.

When questioned about collaborating with the Independence Party, Kristrún remarked that discussions would require significant changes within that party, again reminding everyone that numerous votes were still outstanding.

Inga Sæland, from the People’s Party, recalled her past political experiences and noted differences between her party and the Social Democratic Alliance. Nevertheless, she acknowledged a shift towards equality and welfare within the Social Democratic Alliance since Kristrún’s leadership.

Kristrún complimented Inga for her firm grasp of social issues, highlighting the plight of vulnerable groups in Iceland. Thorgerður Katrín, leader of the Reform Party, remarked that the night was still young, while other political figures expressed their concerns about potential government formation related to EU membership.

As the night progressed, their discussions underscored varying regional sentiments and priorities, with leaders reiterating that the decision on EU membership lies with the citizens of Iceland, not politicians alone.
