Sweden ratifies Ottawa Treaty amid growing calls from Sweden Democrats and Christian Democrats to withdraw

Sweden has ratified the Ottawa Treaty, which prohibits the use of landmines. However, the Sweden Democrats and the Christian Democrats are now collaborating to explore the possibility of withdrawing from this treaty. SD’s Aron Emilsson remarked, “There is no peace that lasts forever. We know that Russia, North Korea, and other adversaries engage in warfare in entirely different ways that put us at a disadvantage.”

In neighboring Finland, the issue of landmines is being actively discussed. The Christian Democrats and Sweden Democrats are advocating for a similar debate to take place in Sweden.

Mikael Oscarsson from the Christian Democrats likened the situation to having a home insurance policy. He stated, “It serves as a deterrent; if Russia knows that we possess these weapons, we may never actually need to use them.”

Additionally, both parties are considering the potential repeal of the ban on cluster munitions.
