Significant disruptions reported for train passengers in Jutland due to signal failure

Numerous train passengers in Jutland have experienced significant delays or complete cancellations of services since Thursday. This disruption is due to a signal failure that affected train traffic across much of the region between 1 PM and 8 PM. While the exact cause of the malfunction is still under investigation by Banedanmark, it has been confirmed that the issues stem from complications within the new digital signal system that is being implemented throughout Jutland from 2018 to 2024, and is set to extend to the rest of Denmark by 2033.

Transport engineer Kristian Madsen has warned that passengers should anticipate ongoing disruptions, as the rollout of the new system will inevitably result in cancellations, delays, and frustration. He noted that, even with childhood teething problems, the older system was more prone to failures than the new one.

Banedanmark acknowledges on its website that “teething problems” are to be expected when the new system is introduced, although it also asserts that the new technology will lead to increased operational reliability and punctuality for trains.

The previous analog system relied on manual signals, while the new European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) provides automated notifications to drivers through an electronic panel in the cab. Passengers have been advised to exercise patience since reverting to the old system is not an option.

Though there have been delays in deploying the new signal system, changes were deemed necessary due to the outdated technology of the old system, which was fraught with issues and spare parts were increasingly difficult to obtain. Despite initial setbacks, officials remain hopeful for enhancements with each new rollout.
