New church inaugurated in Kiihtelysvaara, Joensuu after devastating fire
A new church in Kiihtelysvaara, Joensuu, is set to be inaugurated this Sunday on the first Advent. The building replaces a wooden church that was completely destroyed in an arson fire in September 2018. Anne Angervo, the acting vicar of Ilomantsi, expressed overwhelming gratitude for the new structure, highlighting its importance as a community center that served the village for ten generations.
Residents experienced a profound sense of displacement when the church burned down and were determined to rebuild. Angervo emphasized the rarity of new church constructions today, making this project particularly special.
This reimagined church will include offices, a kitchen, gathering spaces, and a chapel for children, providing a versatile environment. Architect Riikka Kuittinen noted that the wooden design reflects traditional Finnish church architecture, which resonates deeply with the local culture. Initial feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.
The local community has played an active role in the church’s rebirth. Volunteers, including Eevi and Matti Väistö, have diligently contributed to fundraising efforts, amassing approximately €750,000 for construction. Bishop Jari Jolkkonen will preside over the inauguration and praised the efforts of the congregation’s master, Jouni Heiskanen, for rescuing the altar and communion items during the blaze—elements that will now be featured in the new church.
The church aims to foster communal activities, encouraging everyone to create new traditions within its walls. The opening ceremony will be broadcast live on Yle Radio 1, starting at 10 AM on Sunday.
