Starting Sunday, residents in specific police precincts will witness officers equipped with tasers for the first time. This initiative, launching in the Copenhagen West, Nordjylland, and Sør Sjælland and Lolland-Falster police districts, will be tested over a two-year trial period. Authorities hope that the introduction of tasers will serve as a deterrent and may reduce the need for firearms in certain scenarios.

The taser, equipped with ten electrified probes, can fire projectiles over a distance exceeding 13 meters. When at least two probes make contact, the device can deliver a powerful shock lasting up to five seconds. “It induces intense but brief pain that ceases immediately once the power is cut off,” explained an official.

During the announcement of the new Axon Taser 10, a police inspector characterized the device as “highly recognizable.” The goal, she added, is for the taser to de-escalate tense situations, potentially preventing them from worsening. Prior to deployment, the taser produces a distinct blaring signal and a strobe light as warnings.

In the police force’s continuum of force options, the taser occupies a space between verbal warnings and lethal firearms. Its use is governed by similar criteria that apply to batons and pepper spray, offering officers an alternative in environments where firearms might have otherwise been employed.

Around 230 officers have received training on the proper use of the taser. The device has the capacity to administer up to 1,000 volts, which can incapacitate targets, rendering them temporarily unable to move voluntarily.
