Rescue teams prepare for ballot box transport in challenging winter conditions in Iceland
As the 2024 parliamentary elections approach in Iceland, rescue teams in the Westfjords are preparing to transport ballot boxes through challenging winter conditions. The teams from Strandir, Reykhólum, and Dalabyggð plan to self-transport voting materials to the counting station in Borgarnes, amidst yellow weather warnings for these regions.
The conditions are expected to be toughest at Þröskuldar, according to Andri Hrafn Ásgeirsson, head of the rescue team Dagrenning in Hólmavík. Team members will first venture towards Árneshrepp and meet up with rescuers en route. They intend to stop at Drangsnes to pick up additional ballots from Hólmavík, with the Árneshrepp polling site expected to close at three o’clock. The team anticipates arriving at Hólmavík around six.
The journey will involve navigating Þröskuldar, where severe weather is forecasted. Andri expressed concerns over visibility and road conditions but added that the team is well-prepared and will proceed cautiously, planning to travel in two vehicles if conditions worsen.
Meanwhile, other rescue teams from Ísafjörður and Patreksfjörður will be involved throughout the night, transporting ballots from northern Westfjords to Borgarnes after polling stations close at 10 o’clock. It is expected they will only reach their destination by dawn.
The preparations underscore the logistical challenges that can arise in remote areas, particularly during winter. As the election day approaches, safety for both the rescuers and the electoral materials is a paramount concern.
