Faroe Islands and Russia reach fishing rights agreement for 2025

The recent agreement between the Faroe Islands and Russia regarding fishing rights for 2025 is being viewed positively by local officials. Hanus Hansen, the head of the Shipowners’ Association and director of JFK, expressed satisfaction with the terms.

Significant cuts are on the horizon for bottom fish quotas in the Barents Sea for the upcoming year, with the cod quota set to decrease by 23.8% and the haddock quota by 4.5%. However, the Faroese quotas for flatfish and shrimp will remain unchanged from this year.

Specifically, the quotas for Russian waters in 2025 will be as follows: cod at 7,445 tons, haddock at 1,000 tons, flatfish at 900 tons, and shrimp at 4,000 tons.

In addition, the Russian quotas for mackerel and North Sea herring in Faroese waters will also see reductions. The mackerel quota will drop by 34.3%, while the North Sea herring quota will be reduced by 10.6%. The black scad quota is set to remain stable.

For the coming year, Russia will have quotas in Faroese waters totalling 75,000 tons of black scad, 8,080 tons of mackerel, and 5,800 tons of herring. Additionally, Russian vessels will have access to fish up to 52,612 tons of their black scad quota in international waters, which marks a slight reduction compared to this year.

Furthermore, Russian vessels will not be permitted to fish in the exclusive areas designated by the Faroe Islands and the United Kingdom in the upcoming year.
