Kousa announces mayoral candidacy for Helsinki in Finland
Tuuli Kousa from the Green party has announced her candidacy for the position of mayor of Helsinki. In her statement, she emphasized her commitment to making the city the best possible place for residents and entrepreneurs. “Helsinki should be an open and international capital that provides opportunities, perspectives, and hope for a better tomorrow,” Kousa stated. She highlighted that it is essential to address the concerns of the community to ensure that daily life is well-managed.
Kousa, who previously served as chair of the Helsinki City Council and has experience on the city board, now works as an environmental consultant. She believes that Helsinki is currently facing a lack of leadership and ambition, pointing out that the largest employer in Finland has struggled to pay wages during this term. Kousa is confident that her diverse experience in the private sector and politics equips her well for the role of mayor.
As a candidate, Kousa aims to clarify the Green party’s stance and rebuild trust with those who have felt disillusioned in recent years. Former professional basketball player Shawn Huff has also registered to run for mayor, bringing his experience as a city council member. Huff emphasizes that issues concerning children and youth are particularly important to him.
In addition to Kousa and Huff, other figures have shown interest in the mayoral candidacy, including Fatim Diarra, Atte Harjanne, and Otso Kivekäs. The Green party recently faced a shakeup when Pekka Haavisto withdrew his candidacy at the last minute. The party will select its mayoral candidate during their meeting on December 14.
