Efforts to strengthen the protective barriers at Svartsengi and the Blue Lagoon are ongoing, even though conditions have improved since the previous day. Contractors are utilizing cooling techniques to reinforce the edges of the lava, effectively widening the barriers towards the lava flow, which helps save both time and materials.
Cooling operations involve spraying water onto the extremely hot lava near the barriers. The primary aim is to solidify the lava’s edge to prevent molten material from encroaching on the barriers, thereby safeguarding the geothermal plant and surrounding infrastructure.
In certain areas, the lava has risen significantly above the barriers, necessitating an increase in their height to thwart any possible lava overflow. The cooling process allows engineers to safely broaden the barriers.
Currently, the lava is solid at a depth of two to three meters, but below that, it remains molten. Engineers stress the importance of adequately cooling the lava edge to maintain a safe distance for excavation.
The flow from the central vent of the eruption at Sundhnúksgígar had seen a substantial reduction early this morning. Despite the successful fortification of the barriers and lava cooling measures, there is still considerable work to be done.
Plans are in place to elevate the barriers by four meters in specific areas, as vulnerabilities remain along the structure. The ongoing efforts are crucial to maintaining control over the lava flow and ensuring the safety of the facilities in Svartsengi.
