Work continues on barrier reinforcement at Svartsengi and Blue Lagoon in Iceland

Despite the greatest dangers having passed, the ongoing work to reinforce the protective barriers at Svartsengi and the Blue Lagoon is far from complete. To enhance the barrier’s strength, contractors are using cooling methods to solidify the edge of the lava flow, thereby widening the barriers into the lava field, which saves time and materials.

Experts indicate that the primary focus for the teams working on the barriers is to cool the edges of the lava that flows alongside them. This cooling helps keep the underlying lava flow at a distance, maintaining safety for the power plant and surrounding infrastructure.

In some locations, the lava has risen significantly above the barriers, necessitating their elevation to prevent overflow that could threaten the facility.

One geotechnical engineer explains that enhancing the barriers first requires widening them, a step where cooling becomes beneficial. By applying cooling techniques, the strength of the lava’s edge improves, allowing for safer modification of the barriers.

Although significant risks have subsided, the project remains incomplete. The team is currently increasing the height of the barriers in specific areas, focusing on potential weaknesses that still exist near the lava flow.

Cooling measures play a critical role in these efforts. The lava can reach depths of two to three meters, but below that, it remains fluid and adaptable. As the work continues, the objective is to ensure the lava movement remains contained, and the infrastructure remains secure.
