Authorities warn of dangerous icy conditions in Tórshavn as residents report increased skidding incidents

Faroe Islands

In recent days, the police have received numerous reports from residents concerning dangerously slippery conditions. Icy surfaces have unexpectedly caught many off guard. According to a duty officer at the police station in Tórshavn, vehicles are skidding, even those equipped for winter driving. Fortunately, only one traffic accident report has been logged so far.

Authorities are urging both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution in these treacherous conditions.

The duty officer noted that the situation is particularly severe in South Streymoy. In response, both the national road authorities and the Tórshavn municipality have been alerted and have begun salting the roads to mitigate the icy conditions.

Recently, the national road agency announced on its website that there are icy patches in various locations across the country. Access to Gjáar remains restricted, and driving conditions on the Vestmannavegur are reported to be poor.
