Volcanic activity continues at Sundhnúksgígar site affecting Grindavík in Iceland

At the Sundhnúksgígar volcanic site, the situation remains largely unchanged as lava continues to flow along the protective barriers near the power plant. Current assessments indicate that the eruption is not nearing its end. There are reports of gas emissions affecting the nearby town of Grindavík.

Monitoring efforts suggest that volcanic activity is stable, with similar patterns observed to previous eruptions. Although there are indications of diminished volcanic tremors, a continuous influx of magma is noted, alongside slight land subsidence, which is yet to be fully assessed. Experts believe that magma is reaching the surface directly, contributing to the ongoing eruption.

There are three active sites along the fissure line—central, northern, and southern sections. Experts are evaluating whether the intensity of the activity is decreasing, particularly in the southern part. The current lava flow appears to pose lesser strain on the protective barriers as it is directed away from them. However, the risk remains that the lava could potentially overtop these barriers if flows continue to build up.

In terms of air quality, prevailing northerly winds are expected to carry gas emissions over Grindavík and out to sea. It’s anticipated that these conditions will persist over the coming days.
