The volcanic activity near Sundhnúksgígur has raised concerns regarding the stability of critical electrical infrastructure. Efforts are underway to protect two electrical stations in the Svartsengi line from lava flow, which remains an unstable threat.
Officials from Landsnet, the national electricity transmission system operator, along with local emergency services, were actively engaged throughout the night to safeguard the power masts. Despite the challenging conditions, including difficulties in supplying water for cooling the advancing lava, the teams reported some progress.
While this morning, Landsnet’s communications representative noted that efforts were effective, the situation is still precarious. The Svartsengi line currently lacks electricity, with new cable installations required for functionality. Lava continues to flow westward, threatening both the Svartsengi and the Blue Lagoon area, but also spreading north and east.
Resources are being focused on protecting the masts since repairs are expected to be lengthy. It remains unclear when employees from Landsnet will be able to carry out necessary restoration work, making it a priority to prevent further damage. Securing the masts now is essential to minimize future repair times.
In summary, as the volcanic activity persists, continual monitoring and emergency measures are crucial to safeguard Iceland’s electrical grid while ensuring the safety of those involved in the operations.
