Volcanic activity prompts emergency measures near Sundhnúks crater in Iceland

Saturday 23rd November 2024 on 11:58 in Iceland Iceland

Volcanic activity continues near the Sundhnúks crater, prompting immediate protective measures for local power infrastructure. Efforts were made overnight to safeguard two electricity substations in the Svartsengi line against the advancing lava. Authorities have noted that conditions remain precarious.

Emergency services, called to the scene around 6 PM, faced challenges in accessing sufficient water for cooling the flowing lava, as detailed on their social media platforms. A representative from the electricity provider confirmed that operations continued through the night, successfully protecting the transmission towers, although vigilance is still crucial.

The Svartsengi line is currently without power, needing new conductors to restore electricity. Lava flows are moving westward, threatening barriers at Svartsengi and the Blue Lagoon, as well as moving towards northern and eastern areas.

As efforts concentrate on safeguarding the towers, restoration work is anticipated to take considerable time. In the meantime, connecting new conductors between the existing towers is viewed as a more efficient alternative to lengthy repairs. The safety of the personnel involved remains a top priority during these operations.
