This year, the holiday spirit has arrived early for the homeless and vulnerable individuals frequenting the Church of the Cross’s day center in Sønderborg. The center was facing closure due to financial difficulties, but the local municipality has stepped in with a financial aid package of 500,000 kroner, ensuring that operations can continue into next year.

Flemming Christoffersen, a volunteer at the center, expressed his joy over the news. He previously relied on the services for affordable meals and companionship during a challenging time in his life. He emphasized the center’s significance for its users, many of whom lack stable housing. “If the day center were to close, one can only imagine the consequences. Many would be left roaming the streets without access to food,” he noted.

The municipality recognizes the essential role of the center. Stefan Lydal, a member of the local council, highlighted its importance not just for those living on the streets but also for residents who, despite having homes, face vulnerabilities and depend on the center’s daily support.

In the first half of 2025, the municipal economic and labor department will collaborate with the Church of the Cross to develop a sustainable operational agreement for the future of the center. Since its establishment in 1932, the day center has served approximately 50 individuals daily, offering complimentary breakfast, affordable hot lunches for 30 kroner, and access to warm showers.
