Volcanic activity reported at Sundhnúksgígar site in Iceland

Recent volcanic activity has been reported at the Sundhnúksgígar site, with eruptions occurring in three distinct areas along the fissure. The most intense activity is concentrated in the middle section of the fissure. According to a statement from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the volcanic tremors have shown a relatively stable pattern overnight, with no significant earthquakes recorded.

Measurements from nearby GPS stations indicate a downward movement of the land, suggesting that an increased flow of magma is reaching the surface, outpacing the amount that accumulates in the magma chambers below. Lava continues to flow westward, advancing along protective barriers near the Svartsengi geothermal area and the Blue Lagoon, while also moving towards northern and eastern directions.

Forecasts for today predict persistent strong northeasterly winds, raising concerns about potential volcanic pollution impacting the town of Grindavík.
