A recent comparison of toilet papers conducted by a Finnish news outlet examined price and quality across various brands. The study included 12 different toilet paper products from major retailers, including S-Group, K-Group, and Lidl. Most of the tested papers were three-ply, with a few two-ply and one five-ply option. One product notably stood out, Lidl’s Floralys Soft.
The testing, while not scientific, aimed for accuracy. The selected items for evaluation included Coop Nice & Soft, Grite Blossom, K-Menu, Lambi Classic, and several others. Prices were gathered from physical stores at the end of October, with unit prices calculated from 6-10 roll packs.
The budget options featured prominently, with the least expensive roll costing 28 cents, identified as the K-Menu’s two-ply paper, produced in Finland. The next was Xtra Coop from Lithuania at 32 cents, followed by Lidl’s Floralys at 35 cents. Conversely, the most expensive was the five-ply Lotus Just1, priced at €1.09. Most single rolls ranged from 50 to 60 cents.
In terms of strength when wet, the testing revealed that K-Menu and Xtra Coop struggled the most, tearing after minimal exposure to water. Meanwhile, Lotus Just1 demonstrated remarkable durability, surviving four times the amount of moisture before tearing.
Softness and tearing performance were also assessed, indicating that Lithuanian-produced papers felt the roughest, while products from Lotus and Serla, among others, provided the softest touch.
Environmental credentials were mentioned, with eight products carrying the Swan label, a Nordic eco-label, while others featured EU environmental certifications. However, the utilization of recycled fibers in toilet papers remains minimal. The findings highlight Lidl’s Floralys Soft as a leading choice, thanks to its favorable price, quality, and strength performance. In contrast, K-Menu and Xtra Coop exhibited the lowest scores, though they remained competitively priced.
