Riihimäki emerges as Finland’s hub for defense technology innovation

The city of Riihimäki is positioning itself as the leading hub for defense technology in Finland, according to its technology and innovation director, Teemu Seppälä. He emphasizes that the city’s focus on the defense sector is a natural fit, noting its unique status in the international landscape as a military location with seven research units operating locally alongside defense industry players such as Sako and Millog.

Seppälä draws parallels with California’s Silicon Valley, highlighting the aim to create a “Silicon Valley of defense technology” in Riihimäki, albeit on a smaller scale. Currently, the city hosts numerous defense industry companies and is expanding these offerings through an incubator initiative designed to support startups creating products suitable for both civilian and military applications.

The incubator aims to assist twelve selected startups, providing mentorship and networking opportunities with potential investors. Seppälä mentions a strong need for both public and private investment, along with skilled professionals and innovative students from local educational institutes.

One of the startups chosen to participate is Rain Global, which develops technology for monitoring the performance of telecommunications towers, an essential infrastructure element. Its technology provides real-time insights into operational conditions, helping to predict maintenance needs before issues arise.

Another participant, Atle Defence Technologies, is innovating virtual launch systems for military training, presenting a cost-effective alternative to traditional live-fire exercises. The U.S. military is exploring such simulation solutions for future training.

Riihimäki’s defense tech scene is gathering momentum rapidly, with significant interest from local and international investors, driven by geopolitical factors requiring innovative solutions.
