Negotiations stall in Vágar as coalition talks collapse following Bjarni Johansen’s resignation

Negotiations have currently stalled, and unless there’s a significant change, I will refrain from calling for another meeting, said Arni D. Brattaberg, who was elected to the Vágar City Council last week with 120 votes. He represents the Tjóðveldi party.

The initial plan was for the Sambandsflokkurin and the Javnaðarflokkurin to form a majority coalition. However, this fell through when Bjarni Johansen, one of the three council members from the Javnaðarflokkurin, declined to sign the proposed agreement. Instead, it appeared he was looking to establish a coalition with Tjóðveldi.

In a surprising move, Bjarni Johansen has now resigned from the Javnaðarflokkurin.

This situation led to several urgent meetings within the South district’s Javnaðarflokkurin, as the party sought to address the implications of Johansen’s departure. However, before a decision could be reached, Johansen announced his resignation.

While there have been claims that Tjóðveldi and Javnaðarflokkurin are in talks to form a majority, Brattaberg has refuted these statements. “There are no negotiations occurring at this time. There has been a lot of discussion over the phone, but no formal negotiations,” he stated in an interview.
