Students expected to return to Lundarskóli in Akureyri after teachers’ strike ends
A resurgence of students is anticipated at Lundarskóli in Akureyri after a four-week strike by teachers. Classes will resume as educators return to their posts this weekend. Meanwhile, other schools are preparing for temporary strikes, with negotiations regarding pay still far from a resolution.
For nearly a month, Lundarskóli remained quiet, lacking student presence each morning. Despite the strike, a group of school staff, including administrators and assistants, continued to fulfill their responsibilities, maintaining some level of productivity during the downtime. The principal noted that while the initial peace was appreciated, the entire staff is eager to welcome students back.
The strike has impacted 17 different schools over the course of 25 days. Teachers from four additional schools in various regions—Egilsstaðaskóli in Egilsstaðir, Engjaskóli in Reykjavik, Grundaskóli in Akranes, and Lindaskóli in Kópavogur—voted yesterday to strike after the New Year if negotiations fail to conclude satisfactorily before then.
The ongoing negotiations highlight widespread unrest among educators as they advocate for improved compensation. This situation reflects a broader trend concerning educational labor disputes in the region, as various groups seek to address their grievances through collective action.
