Ilmari Nurminen, a member of parliament, is emerging as the leading candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) mayoral nomination in Tampere. Jyrki Koskinen, the chairman of the municipal organization, stated that no other candidates have surfaced as of yet.
The board of the municipal organization is scheduled to meet on Sunday evening, and Koskinen noted that the choice appears to be straightforward since Nurminen is currently the only candidate. The area’s key political groups held their autumn meetings on Wednesday, but Koskinen confirmed that no other nominations had been proposed during those discussions.
The final decision regarding the SDP’s mayoral candidate will be made at a meeting of the municipal organization’s representative council next Wednesday, November 27. This council consists of representatives from about twenty local party branches in Tampere.
Tampere’s next mayor is most likely to come from either the SDP or the National Coalition Party, as previous mayors have hailed from these parties. The current mayor, Kalervo Kummola of the National Coalition Party, has yet to declare his intentions for another term.
Currently, the only party to officially announce a mayoral candidate is the Finns Party, with Joakim Vigelius representing them. The Green Party is in a competitive selection process involving Jaakko Mustakallio, Vilma Järvisalo, and Oke Rouhe, and will conduct a consultative survey among members before naming their official candidate at their meeting on December 7.
Municipal and regional elections are set to take place on April 13, 2025, and the probable mayoral candidate will be from the party or coalition with the most votes, requiring majority support from the council.
