A volcanic eruption occurred unexpectedly at Sundhnúkur, but local officials consider it manageable for the community. Fannar Jónasson, the mayor of Grindavík, reports that residents are responding calmly to the situation. The eruption’s location is deemed favorable, facilitating evacuation efforts.

In a recent interview, Fannar mentioned that the evacuation process has been smooth, with residents aware of the risks and prepared for a quick response. Approximately 50 to 60 houses have been utilized for temporary accommodation due to the recent increase in activity and employment in the area.

The timing of the eruption, which started last evening, was fortuitous, as it coincided with a break in local fishing operations, minimizing the number of workers present. Many residents were just settling in for the night when the eruption began.

Fannar noted that volcanic activity has become a part of life for the people of Grindavík, marking the seventh eruption since December 18. Given the circumstances, he believes the current situation is as stable as possible, and that life in Grindavík will resume normalcy within a few days.

In related seismic activity, there have been ongoing earthquakes in the Reykjanes Peninsula, contributing to the overall volcanic landscape. The community remains vigilant but responsive, navigating the aftermath of this latest geological event.
