Kouvola discusses potential acquisition of passenger station building from VR
Kouvola is currently engaged in discussions with VR regarding the potential acquisition of its passenger station building, with the city council expected to deliberate on this matter in December, as stated by Mayor Marita Toikka. The Kouvola station is a key transportation hub, providing connections to cities such as Helsinki, Kuopio, and Joensuu, which contributes to a significant daily passenger flow.
In October 2023, VR announced plans to divest 25 of its passenger stations across Finland over the coming years, primarily targeting local municipalities for sales. Talks concerning the Kouvola station, which has been in operation since 1960, began soon after VR disclosed its intentions. Negotiations have progressed throughout the year and will likely extend into the next.
Mayor Toikka referred to the station as “the city’s business card,” highlighting its importance. However, she did not provide any specific details about the city’s plans for the building at this stage. Notably, VR has yet to finalize any transactions for its station buildings, as confirmed by Kai Perhola, head of real estate development at VR, who mentioned ongoing discussions for around six stations. Initial sales are anticipated to occur in the upcoming months, though additional assessments may delay Kouvola’s timeline.
Perhola noted that the interest of cities in purchasing these stations depends on factors like local transit needs and the role of these stations as transportation centers. The Kouvola station’s condition has been maintained through necessary renovations, and the building complex is subject to protection regulations, which will also factor into future planning considerations.
