The city of Karkkila in Western Uusimaa has implemented common curfews for children and teenagers as of early September. Similar measures have previously been adopted in several other municipalities, including Eurajoki, Kokemäki, Liminka, Paimio, Saue, and Oulu.
The curfews in Karkkila are as follows:
– Primary school children: Sunday to Thursday by 7:30 PM, Friday and Saturday by 9:00 PM – Seventh and eighth graders: Sunday to Thursday by 8:00 PM, Friday and Saturday by 10:00 PM – Ninth graders and older: Sunday to Thursday by 9:00 PM, Friday and Saturday by 11:00 PM
Pia Penttala, well-known from the Finnish television program “Supernanny,” supports these uniform curfews as beneficial guidelines for families. She notes that families are increasingly seeking help regarding their children’s well-being and that reasonable curfews play a significant role in this context.
A local ninth-grader, Taavi Lehtonen, has shared that the established curfew times have alleviated conflicts at home, as everyone now adheres to the same rules. “The times are quite sufficient, and we rarely stay out longer,” he remarked.
Feedback from the community regarding the new curfews has been largely positive, although some residents argue that the times could be slightly earlier. City planner Satu Ahjoniemi acknowledged that she had to adjust her own teenagers’ curfews. Nonetheless, the overarching message in responses has highlighted a strong demand for such guidelines.
Pia Penttala encourages families to spend quality time together, beyond just adhering to curfews, suggesting evenings and weekends are ideal for bonding. Interestingly, Iceland has gone even further with nationwide curfew regulations for children and teenagers.
