A major bankruptcy in the construction sector is causing uncertainty for private clients, particularly affecting a family planning to relocate to Bergen. The Jørgensen/Lie family made arrangements to leave their apartment and jobs in Copenhagen, intending to move into a new home in Bergen on December 10, followed by new jobs starting January 1. However, their plans are now in limbo after JH Nævdal Bygg AS declared bankruptcy, leaving their new apartment part of a project that requires new contractors.

With the construction industry facing increasing challenges due to reduced projects and rising costs, many families like the Jørgensens must now remain in Copenhagen until the situation stabilizes. Their new three-bedroom apartment was supposed to be ready by mid-December, but the timeline is now uncertain.

While bankruptcy filings rise, recent events have triggered a wave of defaults among construction firms which can create a domino effect on related projects. Following Nævdal’s collapse, several subcontractors, including a masonry company and a painting service, also succumbed to bankruptcy. Yet, new contractors have expressed interest in taking over the projects.

Legal experts highlight the struggle for private customers affected by these bankruptcies, particularly when dealing with international relocation and contractual obligations. Consumer rights protections, including bank guarantees that cover up to 10% of the purchase price, exist but can leave customers without adequate recourse.

Concerns have been raised in Parliament about the need for improved support systems for homebuyers and construction companies, with calls for measures to extend temporary layoffs and boost funding for energy efficiency projects, addressing both employment stability and construction viability.
