Residents in Syddjurs oppose wind turbine project in Aarhus

In some municipalities, the implementation of wind turbines and solar panels is progressing well; however, the green transition faces significant obstacles in other areas. A major issue often stems from residents feeling excluded from the decision-making process. In Aarhus, the construction of three wind turbines near the border with Syddjurs Municipality has sparked considerable disagreement between the two areas.

Residents in Syddjurs express frustration, arguing that Aarhus has effectively silenced their concerns. To voice their opinions regarding the wind turbine project in Vosnæs Pynt, residents must first agree with the plans, which they find unacceptable. Dan Enkelund, a local resident, criticizes the process, claiming decisions seem predetermined despite ongoing discussions.

The Syddjurs City Council is united in its disapproval, with all members urging Aarhus to reconsider its plans. They argue that the impact on nearby residents—51 households within 900 meters of the turbines—has not been adequately addressed, especially as these residents could be compelled to sell their properties to the wind farm developer.

Experts contend that local opposition often arises from insufficient community engagement. Julia Kirch Kirkegaard, a professor at DTU, highlights that late involvement leaves residents feeling ignored, exacerbating tensions around renewable energy projects.

Renewable energy company NRGi, which is partnering with Vosnæs Gods for the wind farm, acknowledges the challenges of balancing early community involvement with operational uncertainties. They recognize the difficulty in pleasing all neighboring residents when introducing such technical installations. According to the current timeline, Aarhus Municipality aims to finalize its local plan for the project by autumn 2025.
