A volcanic eruption has commenced at the Sundhnúks volcanic chain, situated just south of Stóra-Skógfell. The activity began around 10:30 PM local time and was preceded by a series of intense earthquakes. The Icelandic Coast Guard has deployed a helicopter to assess the eruption’s magnitude.

Shortly before the eruption, Grindavík’s police chief, Ulfar Ludviksson, announced on local radio that an evacuation of the town was in progress. Approximately 50 to 60 residents remain in Grindavík, and officials are ensuring their safety amid the volcanic activity.

As authorities have noted, it remains too early to determine the size or specific impact of the eruption, but monitoring continues closely as the situation develops. The intense seismic activity commenced an hour prior to the eruption, with an initial alert issued at approximately 10:30 PM.

This volcanic event is part of a larger series of geological activities affecting the Reykjanes Peninsula, which has seen heightened seismic movements in recent months. Residents and visitors in the area are urged to stay informed and heed evacuation orders as necessary.
