Winter weather delights outdoor enthusiasts in Finland as snow falls across regions
On this Wednesday, wintry conditions coupled with windy weather have brought joy to outdoor enthusiasts. Among them is Jukka Mäkelä, a windsurfer from Pirkkala, who is thrilled about the excellent wind conditions for his sport. Using a modern windsurfing setup, he explained how the wind lifts his board off the water and sends him gliding above the surface. “The wind is perfect, just look at the Finnish flag,” he remarked, expressing his enthusiasm for the beautiful surfing weather.
Despite occasional snow reducing visibility, the gusty winds have created a favorable environment. “If it gets too windy, I might switch to a smaller wing, but for now, I’m sticking with the larger one,” he added, embracing the chilly temperatures thanks to his well-insulated wetsuit and thick gloves.
In East Helsinki, many shoppers at the Puhos shopping center came from regions where snow is a rarity. The snowfall was welcomed with cheer. In Lahti, children rushed outside to play in the fresh snow, showcasing their excitement at The Deddy Bear Daycare.
On Wednesday, snow accumulation in southern and central areas could reach up to 30 centimeters, with further snowfall expected to move northward. A significant development also occurred in Tampere, where the first official ski trail of the season opened today. According to the city’s sports department, the man-made ski track stretches 1.4 kilometers, nearly twice as long as initially anticipated. The winter enthusiasts wasted no time and eagerly hit the trails as soon as daylight broke, looking forward to an enjoyable skiing season.
