A music school in Ísafjörður, Iceland, is feeling the impact of a teachers’ strike that has persisted for over three weeks, disrupting the usual preparations for their annual Christmas concerts. The school typically hosts multiple holiday performances, but this year, those events are now in jeopardy.

Over 210 children, who usually attend music classes at the Ísafjörður Music School and its branches in nearby towns, have missed their regular lessons since the strike began on October 29, as part of a larger campaign by the Icelandic Teachers’ Association for better working conditions. The school’s principal has expressed a deep sense of loss over the absence of music echoing through the halls, particularly at a time when students would typically be busy rehearsing.

The principal mentioned that the school planned seven Christmas concerts and participation in an upcoming Icelandic Piano Festival. The school’s bands and choirs traditionally perform for community events, such as the lighting of holiday decorations in town, but all of this has been put on hold due to the strike.

Despite the challenges, the principal has noted strong support from other educators and the local community. Although the Ísafjörður Music School is the only one in the Westfjords currently on strike, a sense of solidarity among teachers across various educational levels remains evident. The strike might extend for an additional month unless negotiations bring a resolution, leaving students and community members anxious about the loss of music in their lives.
