A traffic jam of three cars has formed at a bridge where a woman and her school-aged son consult a traffic controller. The controller advises them to tap on the window of a red car. The duo, Kaisa Härkönen and her son Ohto Tiiro, are helped by Marja Kupari, who offers them a ride across the bridge to their home island. Although they are strangers, the situation calls for collaboration. “It’s a bold move to jump into a stranger’s car,” Härkönen remarks.
Following a recent incident on November 17, the daily lives of around 1,500 residents in Säynätsalo have faced disruptions due to a broken cable on Louhunsalmi Bridge, leading to restrictions on foot traffic. Kupari appreciates how residents are stepping up to help each other with carpooling, communicating through local Facebook groups. However, with the bridge completely closed to all traffic due to strong winds that evening, residents are concerned about access to work, school, and shopping.
Louhunsalmi Bridge is the vital link between the islands of Lehtisaari and Muuratsalo and the mainland, serving as their only route to town. Many residents compare the current situation to the lockdown experienced during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, as uncertainty looms about bridge accessibility.
Grocery shopping has become a challenge, as no stores are located on the islands. Heikki Mäki, a resident, worries about waste collection, stating that rubbish is piling up since heavy vehicles are prohibited from crossing.
To alleviate the situation, a temporary waste collection point has been established nearby, though residents continue to face daily delays and inconveniences each time they wish to venture to the mainland.
