Preparations for four new road tunnels begin next year in Iceland

Preparations for four new road tunnels are set to begin next year, following the prioritization of transportation projects in the recently approved budget. Funding for transportation has increased by 17%.

The first focus will be on the construction of the Fjarðarheiðargöng tunnels, with groundwork for additional tunnels commencing soon after. The overall transportation budget has seen a boost of 9 billion, emphasizing a commitment to improve infrastructure. However, no actual construction activities will be undertaken next year, making it the fifth consecutive year with no tunneling work in progress.

The previous transportation plan faced significant delays, leading to uncertainty regarding next year’s projects. The government has since provided a rundown of priority projects for the coming year, primarily focusing on road improvements. Key initiatives include enhancements to the Reykjanesbraut highway and ongoing projects along Hornafjarðarfljót, along with improvements in various regions, including Gufudalssveit and Dynjandisheiði.

Next year will also see the initiation of work on a new bridge over Ölfusá, with funding expected to be recouped through tolls. Plans are underway for the Sundabraut and four additional tunnels. Although the Fjarðarheiðargöng project remains in limbo due to unresolved tolling discussions, it is primed for tendering and aligned with the government’s efforts to expedite tunnel constructions in the coming years.

Additionally, 6.7 billion will be directed towards transportation agreements within the capital region, covering projects like the Fossvogs bridge and improved traffic management. Airports, including Akureyri and Egilsstaðir, are also set to receive upgrades funded through a new airport tax, alongside enhancements for smaller airfields.
