A woman has been officially charged with committing a serious assault on a staff member at Vinakot, a privately-run facility for children and young people facing various challenges, back in 2022. As a result of the attack, the staff member has been assessed with a permanent disability of 40%.
The charge against the woman, who was a resident at Vinakot, revolves around allegations that she violently attacked the staff member, who was alone with her at that time. Reports indicate that she pushed the staff member multiple times against the outer door and dragged her from the sofa to try to slam her head against a wall. Additional accusations claim that the woman shoved the staff member’s head towards a window sill and struck it repeatedly.
The violent incident left the staff member with a range of injuries including issues with her neck, bruising on her face and lower jaw, and strains along her back and limbs. Her permanent disability has been quantified at 40%, with a permanent impairment rating of 35.
The indictment seeks both punitive measures against the accused and compensation for damages. The victim is also pursuing a separate claim for five million in damages, plus interest.
Authorities emphasize the importance of staffing protocols in care facilities, highlighting that there should never be just one staff member on duty to prevent such incidents from occurring.
