Teacher sparks heartbreak among children in Stockholm by denying existence of Santa Claus and elves

However, on November 11, Bonnie received a message from her daughter’s teacher, which sharply diminished their holiday cheer. During a religion lesson, the teacher informed the first graders that neither elves nor Santa Claus exists.

The teacher’s message sparked what has been described as a “collective heartbreak” among the children, leading some to lose their holiday spirit. Bonnie Meier expressed her appreciation for the teacher but felt it wasn’t appropriate for a teacher to dispel children’s beliefs in such a setting. She remarked, “I cannot understand the need to take the magic away from my daughter.” Following the lesson, she noticed her daughter becoming more skeptical about the holiday’s enchanting figures.

To reinstate that sense of wonder, Bonnie is taking steps to reinforce her daughter’s belief by hanging clementines and preparing rice porridge for Santa’s elves. When pressed about the reality of these characters, she said, “I am an adult, and I still believe in them a bit. It’s not the teacher’s role to dictate beliefs.” Ultimately, Bonnie believes her daughter can decide the truth of these magical beings when she feels the magic has faded. In her message, the teacher acknowledged her oversight and pledged to exercise more caution in the future when discussing holiday themes.
