A prominent member of the Green League, Atte Harjanne, has announced his candidacy for the position of mayor of Helsinki. His decision comes in light of Pekka Haavisto’s recent announcement that he would not be available for the mayoral race ahead of next spring’s municipal elections. Harjanne expressed his love for the city, stating that he is eager to contribute to its future.

Harjanne believes in creating a charming, eco-friendly, enjoyable, and secure capital, particularly needed in today’s challenging times. The dynamics within the Green League shifted recently when Haavisto’s unexpected withdrawal opened the door for new candidates.

In addition to Harjanne, fellow city council member Otso Kivekäs has also declared his interest in becoming the next mayor. He made this decision after receiving numerous requests this week. Kivekäs aims to protect Helsinki’s valuable and diverse natural environment while fostering a city that people are keen to move to and reside in comfortably. He emphasizes the necessity for a city where everyday life is manageable and enjoyable.

Kivekäs brings extensive local political experience and believes this background equips him for effective governance. He advocates for a collaborative culture over confrontational politics.

Before Harjanne and Kivekäs, another Green representative, Fatim Diarra, expressed her desire to run for mayor as well. Traditionally, the mayoral position is awarded to the largest party in the city council following municipal elections, a title that has seen fierce competition between the Greens and the National Coalition Party in recent years. The Helsinki Greens will determine their mayoral candidate during their autumn meeting on December 14, which will include a consultative vote among members.
